چکیده

THE classical cataract section, either by a von Graefe knife or by a keratome and scissors, is essentially a section in which the cornea is sliced (Fig. 1). An enormous number of techniques has been developed which incorporate this slicing section; these usually involve direct suturing either of the cornea after its section, or of the corneo-scleral margin with or without a flap to cover the incision. The two fundamental objects of any cataract section are that an adequate opening is made in the globe for the extraction of the lens and that the section is closed post-operatively so that the normal globular shape of the eyeball is reassumed without aqueous leak or iris prolapse; but in my opinion the classical type of section is unsatisfactory in that, when normal intraocular pressure is built up, the anterior and posterior surfaces of the incision tend to be forced apart so that, were it not for the normal process of healing aided by corneal suturing or a covering flap, the natural course of events would be a constantly leaking wound. With this objection in mind I turned to the development of a corneal section which would jam the section edges together instead of forcing them apart, or which would at least create the maximum amount of friction between the cut edges. The section upon which I have been engaged has been a slanting one, with the slant inclining from the direction of the corneal centre towards the angle of the anterior chamber and in a posterior direction. This is similar to the way in which a watch glass fits into the rim of a watch (Fig. 2).

Palynology of the Permian succession from the Ajabshir area (Azerbaijan, Central Iran): a preliminary report

Permian stratigraphic sequences are widely distributed throughout Iranian, making this one of the best locations in the world to study15 this geological time interval. Nevertheless, some units lack detailed biostratigraphic characterization which is essential for16 palaeogeographic reconstructions. This preliminary study comprises a palynological assessment of a Permian stratigraphi...

Treatment of ophidism-induced bilateral canine cataract by extracapsular lens extraction and intraocular lens implantation

The aim of this study was to report a new cause of cataract, namely snake bite induced cataract in a dog. A 3-year-old male mongrel dog was referred to our clinic for the assessment of cataract in both eyes. The dog was bitten by a snake nearly 4 months ago. A 40 dioptre acrylic lens with 13 mm haptics was implanted into the lens capsule. In the left eye, posterior synechia was detected in the ...

A Modified Operation for Extraction of Senile Cataract

as the stage next to that of corneal section and iridectomy in the extraction of a hard cataract; and I believe that this rule is invariably followed by the ophthalmic surgeons of the present day. The modification I propose, and have adopted in all my late cases, is to tear the capsule of the lens as the first preliminary step in the operation for extraction of cataract. The advantages accruing...

Intracapsular Cataract Extraction Using Low Temperature.

Preliminary Report THE first report on the use of cryosurgery in cataract extraction was made by Krwawicz (1961); since then he has reported 660 extractions performed by this method. Kelman and Cooper (1963) have described its use in an unspecified number of.cases which included subluxated lenses and dislocated lenses. Bellows (1964) reported 6 cases. Rosengren (1965) gave the results of 120 cr...

Determination of Serum Ceruloplasmin Concentration in Patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma with Cataract and Patients with Cataract Only: A Pilot Study

BACKGROUND The aim of this article was to describe the role of ceruloplasmin and to report preliminary results of ceruloplasmin concentrations in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) with cataract and in patients with only cataract. Glaucoma, a neurodegenerative disease, is a heterogeneous group of conditions characterized by loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGC), their axons, progre...
